Generational diversity in healthcare teams is increasingly recognized as a critical factor influencing organisational culture and team dynamics. This study explores the impact of age differences among doctors working in healthcare institutions in Chennai city. The primary objectives were to identify generational groups, examine how these differences affect communication and teamwork, and assess their influence on organisational culture. Using a quantitative research approach, data were collected from 176 doctors through systematic random sampling and analysed with statistical tools.
The results revealed distinct communication preferences and work values across generations, with younger doctors favouring collaborative, technology-driven interactions and senior doctors emphasizing traditional, hierarchical approaches. These differences influenced team cohesion and workplace culture, occasionally causing misunderstandings but also fostering innovation through diverse perspectives. The findings highlight both challenges, such as intergenerational conflicts, and opportunities to enhance collaboration by leveraging the unique strengths of each generation.
In conclusion, the study underscores the importance of implementing targeted strategies to improve intergenerational understanding and teamwork within Chennai’s medical community. Such efforts can lead to a more cohesive organisational culture, better job satisfaction among doctors, and ultimately, enhanced quality of patient care.
